The Family-centred approach
‘MindBuilders’ uses a therapeutic model of continuing assessment and intervention for the child in relationship with their family and in their home environment, incorporating Dr. Solomon’s PLAY-programme, which is based on the DIR-Model of the Floortime Foundation www.floortime.org
Unlike traditional assessments that
aim for a fixed diagnosis and a one-off
static ‘snapshot’ of the child’s difficulties,
we see a child’s development as a
dynamic process that is subject to
continuous change and can not be
‘assessed’ outside of the child’s
relationships with their parents/family.
We work with the whole family, as living
with autism affects everyone in the family,
using a combination of PLAY-techniques,
video-guidance or simply taking time to
talk about the difficulties or anxieties
of family-members.
We usually plan for about 10 visits per year, re-assessing the child’s developmental levels in each session, together with parents, in order to adapt PLAY-techniques to guide all PLAY-partners towards helping the child to climb the developmental ladder to the best of his/her potential.’
